Since we live here, we don’t get the chance to stay at many of the cool and unique lodges and vacation rentals that are in Henderson County. We’ve come closer than most, though, at Moonbeam Bungalows since for several years we lived right across the road from them.

Moonbeam is on the hillside up above the town of Horse Shoe, (which is also home to Lazy Otter Outfitters), tucked away even from the gravel road and nicely secluded from other homes in the neighborhood. The owner, Grace, lives on a different property just up the road so she spends a lot of time caring for her two cute little rental houses and making sure her guests have an easy and fun stay.
We recently moved over to Mills River but I stopped by the other day to say hi to Grace, and of course found her busy working in Moonbeam’s courtyard. I’d seen the photos of the bungalows’ interiors on her website and knew she’d done a great job decorating, but I happened to catch her between guests in the larger “Moonbeam” unit (the smaller unit is the “Satellite”) so she was able to show me inside. It has such personality, with colorful furniture, local art, a cool spiral staircase up to the loft and a big queen-size bunk bed that Grace made herself (with help, she says!). It’s cozy but between the big bed and the loft it can sleep up to five.
The Satellite is a little smaller and sleeps up to three, but is decorated with the same funky
vibe. There’s a shared courtyard, a five-person spa, a fire pit area and hammocks in the trees. Dogs are welcome in both and I know they’d have fun exploring the yard!
